New details unveiled in Chinatown acid attack

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Honolulu police Lt. Deena Thoemmes unveiled the latest developments in the brutal Chinatown acid attack on Friday, Aug. 8.

The incident happened shortly after 10 p.m.

Police said the victim, a 30-year-old man, was crossing the street when an unknown suspect “threw an unidentified liquid,” causing severe burns to his face and upper body. He was brought to the hospital in critical condition.

The Honolulu Fire Department later identified the liquid as sulfuric acid.

Officials said the victim remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition.

Honolulu police said the victim did not know the suspect, and HPD is unsure “whether this was a hate crime, or what the suspect’s motives were.”
