TSA launches new family-exclusive lane

HONOLULU (KHON2) — As a part of their “Families on the Fly” initiative, TSA has added a family exclusive lane at Terminal 2’s Checkpoint 4.

This lane is exclusive to families traveling with children 12 years of age or younger. It’s designed to make lines shorter at regular checkpoints, and have officers prepared to help with items like strollers and carry-on bags.

The goal is for traveling with the whole family to be just a little bit easier.

“With our Hawaiian Islands being a top tourist destination for vacationing families, I’m thrilled that we now have the added availability to expedite the screening process,” said TSA Federal Security Director for Pacific Airports Nanea Vasta. “Makes the airport experience more enjoyable for both our local ʻohanas and for visitors alike.”

The Terminal 2 lane has so far been a huge success, and TSA is now looking to expand on it further, including opening a similar lane in Terminal 1 and continue working on their “Families on the Fly” campaign.

Some benefits of the campaign include a discounted TSA Pre Check fee for families, and dedicated Pre-Check lanes for military service members.

Honolulu is one of about 20 cities to be selected by TSA for experimenting with family friendly sites at the airport.

“Our goal is very simple. To get people through the lines as quickly as possible, as soon as possible, and as quickly as possible,” said Curt Otaguro, Hawaii Department of Transportation deputy director of transportation for airports. “Thanks to TSA, they’re making that happen.”

This is also one of many improvements that are looking to be made to the entire airport. HDOT just released a new wayfinding app for both Daniel K. Inouye Airport and Lihue Airport, with an app for Kahului Airport also in development.
