HPD identifies suspect in Chinatown acid attack

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Honolulu Police Department has identified the suspect in the Aug. 8 Chinatown acid attack.

Police say 34-year-old Marquis Johnson is the suspect in the alleged crime that left a 30-year-old man in critical condition.

According to HPD, the victim was crossing the street when Johnson allegedly approached him and asked him a few questions before throwing acid on him. As a result of the attack, the victim sustained severe burns to his face and upper body, HPD said.

It is currently unknown if this was a random act of violence, HPD said.

“I’m just going off what we know, and what we do know is the victim said he did not know him,” said HPD Lt. Deena Thoemmes. “That’s what we were told, but that may change depending on how the investigation progresses.”

Johnson is considered dangerous, HPD said. If spotted, do not approach and immediately call 911.
