Nimitz Highway lane closed 24/7 until 2030: HART

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Lanes on Nimitz Highway and Iwilei Road will be closed for the next five years starting Aug. 18, 2025, the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation announced.

Between ‘Awa Street and Bishop Street, one lane of Nimitz Highway in both the eastbound and westbound directions will be closed 24 hours a day, seven days a week for construction.

Crews will work on the elevated rail guideway and stations.

The City Center Guideway and Stations project is expected to be completed in September 2030, HART said.

Closures and alternate routes

Left turning lanes will be closed at ‘Awa Street, Smith Street, Nu‘uanu Avenue, Bethel Street and Fort Street intersections.

Closures may occur at:

  • ‘Awa Street and Iwilei Road between Kuwili Street and North King Street
  • The westbound ramp from Nimitz Highway onto Iwilei Road

Follow marked detour signage while closures are in place, HART said.

Resident and business access will be maintained, but drivers and pedestrians will be detoured as needed around work areas.

Alternate routes include:

  • King Street
  • Beretania Street

HART encourages drivers to use alternate routes for eastbound and westbound travel.

From 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., use of of heavy equipment will include excavators, saw cutters, impact pile drivers and hoe rams Monday through Friday.

As needed, overnight work may occur from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m., HART said.
