HONOLULU (KHON2) — A suspect has now been formally charged in connection with a disturbing acid attack that left a man permanently scarred.
On Tues., Aug. 19, just after 4:30 p.m., the Honolulu Police Department charged 34-year-old Marquis Johnson with assault in the first degree. His bail was set at $500,000.
Earlier this week, on Sun., Aug. 17, Johnson turned himself in to the police where detectives took him into custody.
This charge stems from an incident on Aug. 8, in Chinatown, where Johnson threw acid on a man, causing serious permanent disfigurement and scarring.
Under Hawai‘i law, first-degree assault is a Class B felony, with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
Prosecutors said the high bail reflects both the severity of the crime and the safety of the community.
Court documents indicate that Johnson intentionally or knowingly caused “serious bodily injury,” which according to state law, includes permanent disfigurement and the protracted loss or impairment of physical function.
Because Johnson was charged by information, he did not make a court appearance on Tuesday.
