Fugitive apprehended in Texas after being ‘mistakenly released’ from NOLA jail in July

HOUSTON (KIAH) – A fugitive who was mistakenly released from a New Orleans jail has been arrested in the Houston area, authorities said.

Khalil Bryan was apprehended Wednesday morning in Cypress, Texas, according to the Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office. Bryan was wanted for multiple outstanding felony warrants in Louisiana for home invasion, aggravated assault, child endangerment and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Bryan, 30, had been “mistakenly released” from the Orleans Parish Justice Center in July due to a “misidentification between two individuals with a similar last name,” New Orleans officials said at a July 25 press conference, Nexstar’s WGNO previously reported.

Officials said at the time that they were unaware if Bryan knew he was mistakenly released. They launched a search for Bryan immediately after becoming aware of their error.

“I want to make a sincere apology to the people of New Orleans. The mistake and release of Khalil Bryan was a serious error and as sheriff, I take full responsibility,” Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson said in July.

As a result of the error, two deputies with the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office had been fired for “severe breach of duty and process,” while five others were suspended. The Orleans Parish’s processes for releasing inmates were also updated in the wake of the incident.

When he was found at a home in Cypress on Wednesday morning, Bryan had attempted to escape from a window, authorities said. He was treated for minor injuries and then booked into the Harris County Jail.

Bryan is expected to be sent back to New Orleans to face pending charges.
