HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hawaiʻi has been ranked the #1 state for well-being. That’s according to the 2025 World Population Review.
The index measures Hawaiʻi’s physical, social, community, purpose and financial health, as well as healthcare access, food access, resource access, housing and transportation and economic security.
How the index works
The Sharecare Community Well-Being Index uses more than 600 data points to create a single score.
For 2025, Hawaiʻi earned 71 points. One other state matched our score: Massachusetts. But Hawaiʻi placed first in the United States.
Other states in the top five include Maryland at 70, New Jersey at 70 and New York at 69.
Scores range from 0 to 100, with 100 being the best. Hawaiʻi and Massachusetts lead the country, while states like Mississippi, at 46, and West Virginia, at 50, remain at the bottom.
Why it matters
The rankings highlight major differences in health and quality of life across the country. Some states consistently perform well, such as Hawaiʻi, Massachusetts and Maryland. Others face more difficulty, particularly in areas such as economic security and access to healthcare.
The 2025 report shows that Hawaiʻi continues to rank at the top for overall well-being. The state is anchored by its leading marks in physical health, social and community strength and financial security.
