Hawaiʻi Island first responders kept busy following brush, structure fires

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hawaiʻi Island firefighters fought multiple fires within two days. Most recently, firefighters responded to a structure fire in Puna just before 4 a.m. on Aug. 22.

A one-story structure on Mamo Street that appeared to be abandoned was partially on fire, reported the Hawaiʻi County Fire Department.

Firefighters had the fire under control at 4:18 a.m. An hour later, the fire was completely extinguished.

The department identified the fire’s location as suspicious.

“The structure was boarded up, but there was evidence of possible squatters living in and around the property,” HFD said in a press release.

An investigation is ongoing.

Honokaʻa brush fire
