Maui debris cleanup passes halfway milestone

LAHAINA, Hawai‘i (KHON2) — The cleanup after the Lahaina wildfire is more than halfway done.

About 64% of the burned debris has already been moved by workers to a safe site in Central Maui, officials say.

This project began in June, led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, as well as with Maui County.

They say everything is going smoothly. “If you know someone hauling the debris, please thank them, give them a big mahalo because they’re doing amazing work for us and the community,” said Lt. Col. Adrian Biggerstaff.

Mayor Richard Bissen also thanked residents and visitors for being patient. “We appreciate everyone’s understanding as we move the debris safely,” he said.

Drivers are reminded to be extra careful on the roads since large trucks are hauling debris daily.
