HONOLULU (KHON2) — Bodycam footage showed a selfless response from one Kauai Police Department officer, who hiked nearly one mile to rescue an injured hiker on the Kalalau trail.

Officer Matthew VanAken was honored for the rescue at the Kauai Police Commission meeting and was awarded the Police Commendation Medal, one of the department’s highest honors, KPD said.

Officer VanAken set aside his own safety to render aid and protect the well-being of another. His willingness to assume personal risk on behalf of someone in need exemplifies the highest standards of public service and police duty.

According to police, the rescue happened back in July when Officer VanAken was flagged down to respond to a missing hiker on the Kalalau Trail.

Following the report, Officer VanAken began his trek, nearly one mile into the steep and precarious terrain of the trail, and began searching for the hiker.

He found the hiker being helped by a Good Samaritan. Officials said the hiker was showing signs of severe muscle cramping and dehydration.

Because the hiker was unable to walk on his own, Officer VanAken decided to fireman carry him. He then carried the hiker over his shoulders the entire trek back.

Officials said that while the trek back to safety was demanding, Officer VanAken remained composed and attentive, ensuring the hiker’s calmness as they reached medical personnel.

“Officer VanAken’s courage, composure, and compassion in the face of challenging conditions exemplify the core values of the Kaua‘i Police Department,” KPD added.
