HPD: Officer ‘disregarded’ red light, hit moped driver

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A serious motor vehicle collision caused the shutdown of Kapiʻolani Boulevard near Pensacola Street during the early morning hours of Aug. 27.

According to the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, the incident occurred at approximately 4 a.m.

An HPD officer was traveling southbound on Pensacola Street with his light illuminated. That’s when police say the officer “disregarded the red traffic signal at the intersection of Kapiʻolani Boulevard.”

As a result, the officer then collided into a 25-year-old male moped driver traveling eastbound on Kapiʻolani Boulevard, police said.

The moped driver was ejected onto the road and taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.

The officer remained at the scene and was uninjured.
