HONOLULU (KHON2) — The state has released a new “Engage Hawaiʻi” website, aimed at increasing government transparency and civic engagement for residents of the islands, Gov. Josh Green announced on Sept. 2.
The first issue Engage Hawaiʻi looks to address is the future of U.S. Army land leases in the islands.
“Decisions about Hawaiʻi’s lands are decisions about our future,” Green said. “The Army’s current leases expire in 2029 and while federal leaders have emphasized national security concerns, they’ve also indicated they could act through eminent domain, which would leave Hawaiʻi with nothing in return. We must stand firm and ensure our people’s voices are at the center of these negotiations.”
The newly-launched website provides the public with access to background materials, lease discussion updates and more.
Residents will be able to submit their own opinions and concerns directly through the website via their public engagement form.
Those interested can also view formal documents and see how community input is taken into account when decisions are made regarding such topics.
Engage Hawaiʻi wasn’t just created for input on military leases — officials say the site is set to expand to cover statewide issues such as the Green Fee, climate issues, housing issues, healthcare and more.
“Our goal is to make government more open, accessible and collaborative,” Green said. “Engage.Hawaii.gov is a place where residents can share their manaʻo and help shape solutions for Hawaiʻi’s future. This is just the beginning — as the site grows, so will the opportunities for our community be heard.”
