Hit the jackpot: Mililani resident wins Summer Reading Challenge

HONOLULU (KHON2) — One lucky reader from Mililani has won the ultimate prize.

Over 23,400 readers participated in the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge, and Cindy Yoshida, a reader at Mililani Public Library, hit the jackpot in a statewide drawing.

“To be the grand prize winner was an awesome surprise and one that my family will surely appreciate and remember always. Thank you so very much!” Yoshida said.

Yoshida won the grand prize of four round-trip tickets on Alaska Airlines. She received her prize on Sep. 2.

“Congratulations to Cindy and her family,” said State Librarian Stacey A. Aldrich. “The Summer Reading Challenge is one of the primary tools our libraries use to support literacy, and we are grateful to the Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i and Alaska Airlines for their support in this effort and for providing such an awesome grand prize to encourage our communities to read!”

This year’s challenge, themed “E Heluhelu Kākou: Mele”, drew 5.4 million minutes logged by children, and over 102,000 books read by teens and adults.
