Opening week in the National Football League comes with a Hawai‘i native ready to tackle the upcoming season.
Punahou alum and Dallas Cowboys linebacker Marist Liufau steps into Year 2 with high expectations as America’s Team heads to Philadelphia to face the defending Super Bowl champions.
A third-round draft pick in 2024, Liufau made his presence felt as a rookie with 50 tackles despite seeing action on just 47 percent of defensive snaps. Now, he’s aiming to level up under a new defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus.
“I love how we emphasize our play style before anything else,” said Liufau. “We’re emphasizing running to the football, being aggressive, and just really hustling.”
Eberflus, who was previously a head coach in Chicago and was previously was the linebackers coach for the Cowboys from 2011 to 2017, has been a hands-on presence for Liufau’s development.
“He’s always in the room, always giving his feedback,” Liufau said. “On the field, he’s helping us wherever he can. They do a great job of developing us, especially at linebacker.”
Liufau says the biggest change from rookie year to sophomore season is confidence.
“Having a year under my belt helps for sure. The game slows down, and I feel more comfortable at the NFL level.”
The Cowboys and Eagles square off Thursday in Philly. Kickoff is set for 2:20 p.m. HST on NBC.
