HONOLULU (KHON2) — Renovations are on the horizon for Līhuʻe Airport! The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded Hawaiʻi $51,315,736 in federal grant funding for improvements on Kaua‘i.
U.S. Senator Brian Schatz, a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation and Housing, made the announcement on Sept. 4.
“This new federal funding will help strengthen infrastructure at Līhuʻe Airport, making it safer and more reliable for travelers,” Schatz said.
In a press release, he said the funding will help complete Līhuʻe Airport’s ongoing runway relocation project.
The AK1031-14 Relocate Runway 3-21 project began in 2024 and is anticipated to end in 2026, according to HDOT’s Airports Division website.
“The objective of this project is to relocate Rwy 3-21 to the west in order to maximize the Rwy 3 Runway Safety Area to the maximum extent practical given the land and property constraints,” officials said.
Work will also include the installation of new LED runway and taxiway edge lights, LED airfield signage and new lighting conduits and cabling.
As of Sept. 4, the project has received more than $100 million in federal funding.
