Weaver gets the start, leads UH to win over Sam Houston

The University of Hawaii football team opened its three-game homestand with a 37-20 win over Sam Houston on Saturday night at Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.

The victory takes the ‘Bows to 2-1 on the season.

Junior college transfer Luke Weaver made his first career start at quarterback in place of the injured Micah Alejado and delivered a strong performance. Weaver finished 27 of 43 for 294 yards, three touchdowns and one interception while guiding the Rainbow Warriors to a nine-point halftime lead.

Pofele Ashlock led the receiving corps with seven catches for 125 yards and two touchdowns.

On defense, Hawaii got a boost from Lester Lagafuaina, who recorded 2.5 tackles for loss, and Giovanni Iovino, who returned an interception 41 yards for a touchdown after Kilinahe Mendiola-Jensen deflected the pass.

The Rainbow Warriors return to action next Saturday for their homecoming game against Portland State.
