HAMAKUA, Hawaii (KHON2) — As of Sept. 7, the Hawaii Fire Department has contained 30 percent of a brush fire that’s been burning in the Manowaiale`e Forest Reserve in Hamakua District.
The fire has burned approximately 420 acres so far, and members of the community are rallying together to show their support for the HFD as they continue to fight this fire.
Starting today, Sept. 7, breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided by the Salvation Army Hilo Temple Corps to the 70 firefighters battling the brush fire.
The Hilo Temple Corps team is working inside the reserve to serve up these meals as long as needed.
“It is an honor to serve those who are so bravely keeping our communities safe and these vital forested lands preserved,” said Hilo Temple Corps Officer and Hawaiʻi Island Coordinator, Captain Sam LeMar.
