Brush fire burns 420 acres in Hamakua District

HAMAKUA, Hawaii (KHON2) — On Sun., Sept. 7, at around 10:55 a.m., the Hawaii Fire Department responded to a brush fire in the Hamakua District.

The fire happened in the Manowaiale’e Forest Reserve, where about 420 acres were burned, and 30% of the fire is now contained.

HFD said that smoke is visible and may be noticeable in other areas of Hawaii Island, including Kohala and Kona Districts.  

Officials stated that no structures or people were threatened, and there were no road closures due to the fire. 

Crews are active and fighting the fire.
