HONOLULU (KHON2) — Following the shooting death of 31-year-old Charlie Kirk, a popular conservative activist, leaders from around the islands expressed their support and thoughts for his family and condemned violence.
Kirk was shot at a rally for his Turning Point organization in Utah on Sept. 10, which has brought in statements from local leaders.
“The tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk today is both heartbreaking and unacceptable. Charlie’s voice inspired many across the country, and this senseless act of violence leaves behind a void that words cannot fill,” said Minority Floor Leader Rep. Diamond Garcia. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, their two children and his extended ʻohana during this time of unimaginable loss. Violence has no place in politics. We can only hope that one day people will be judged by their character and what they did for humanity rather than the color of their party.”
Joining Garcia, Rep. Kanani Souza also called for thoughts and prayers.
“My thoughts and prayers are with Charlie Kirk’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. Political violence has no place in a free society, and we must remain united in our rejection of such acts,” Souza said. “Protecting our democracy requires that differences be addressed through productive dialogue and peaceful engagement.”
The Hawaiʻi Republican Party issued a statement, expressing their shared “shock and sorrow” with the greater community.
“To the millions of Americans struggling to make sense of what happened — please know you are not alone,” the statement said in part. “We grieve with you, and we share in your shock and sorrow.”
The GOP continued on to condemn the violence and carry on what they view as Kirk’s legacy.
“Political violence has no place in our society. Not now. Not ever,” the statement continued. “As the Hawaiʻi Republican Party, we stand united in our deep commitment to the values Charlie championed: faith, family, freedom, one nation under God and a future built on hope.”
From the White House, President Donald Trump expressed his respect for Kirk by ordering the flags be flown at half-staff.
“As a mark of respect for the memory of Charlie Kirk, by the authority vested in my as President of the United States… I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff…,” Trump said in a statement.
A person of interest is now in police custody.
