LIVE: 152nd Annual King Kamehameha Day kicks off with Lei Draping Ceremony

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Friday kicked off a weekend-long celebration for King Kamehameha Day as the statue at Ali‘iōlani Hale was draped in fresh, handmade leis during the annual lei draping ceremony.

The King Kamehameha Day Celebrations held throughout the state bring together communities as they celebrate the 152nd Anniversary of the holiday in 2024.


The King Kamehameha Celebration Commission is this weekend

Friday’s lei draping ceremony draws in residents and visitors to view the cultural protocols and pageantry that kick off the King Kamehameha Day Celebrations.

With the theme He Inoa No Kalaninui Kamehameha – Honor to Kamehameha the Great, the events provide both residents and visitors the opportunity to connect with the Hawaiian culture and engage with practitioners, participating in this legacy event perpetuating the culture authentically.
