The AIA in Honolulu hosts 20th annual CANstruction event

HONOLULU (KHON2) – AIA Honolulu celebrates 20 years by hosting a CANstruction competition and invites the public to participate.

This year at Kahala Mall, 10 teams of local architects were CANstructing dynamic 3D structures, each made from several thousand cans of food donated to the Hawaii Foodbank.

AIA Honolulu invited the public to take part in this wonderful giving-back moment, fostering humility and unity within our communities.

In total, they have already gathered 743,690 pounds of canned goods, which is enough to make over 600,000 meals, and more than $110,000.

There are different events that are being held:

Build Day began on Sept. 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., when the 10 teams start “CANstructing” their displays.

Display and public voting, also known as the “People’s Choice Award,” opened on Sept. 13 and will continue through Sept. 20. Each vote is a $1 donation to the Food Bank.

The Keiki Corner build ran from 10 a.m. to noon, where UH School of Architecture students will lead keiki ages five through 12 in free building activities using hundreds of donated cans.
