UH’s Leyva & Reid earn Big West weekly honors

After helping the University of Hawai‘i women’s volleyball team sweep Portland in a two-match series, sophomore libero Victoria Leyva and freshman outside hitter Cha’lei Reid earned Big West Conference honors on Monday.

Leyva was named Defensive Player of the Week, the first conference award of her career, while Reid collected her second consecutive weekly honor as Freshman of the Week.

Leyva anchored the Rainbow Wahine defense with 40 digs, averaging 4.44 per set. She recorded a match-high 17 digs in the opener before tying her season and career best with 23 in UH’s four-set win on Friday.

Reid paced the UH offense with 36 kills over the series, averaging 4.00 per set. She tallied 18 kills in both matches, added three aces and five blocks, and finished with a team-high 41.5 points. Reid posted her first career double-double with 18 kills and 10 digs in the opener, followed by 18 more kills, seven digs and two aces in the rematch. The reigning Big West Offensive Player of the Week ranks third in the league in points per set (4.65) and fourth in kills per set (3.71).

The Rainbow Wahine (4-4), winners of four straight, open their first road trip of the season this week in Northern California.

Hawai‘i faces fourth-ranked Stanford on Friday, followed by UCLA on Saturday and Texas State on Sunday.
