HONOLULU (KHON2) — Kīlauea’s 33rd episode of its ongoing Halemaʻuma’u eruption began at 3:11 a.m. on Sept. 19.
Lava is fountaining at a height of more than 500 feet, with some previous episodes having reached more than 1,000 feet in height.
Prior to the episode, there was sporadic spattering from the crater, which started on Sept. 16. Small amounts of lava then began to overflow from the vent on Sept. 17, with the episode beginning not too long after.
With the eruption, experts urge the public to be aware of potential hazards that come with the stunning sights. Pele’s hair, vog and other emissions can be carried far from Kīlauea by wind. For more information on hazards, visit the USGS website.
