Gov. Green unveils details of first HHSAA Surfing State Championships

HONOLULU (KHON2) — First details of Hawaii’s first high school surfing championships were announced on Monday, Sept. 22.

Gov. Josh Green announced with Rep. Sean Quinlan, Olympic Medalist Carissa Moore and other members of the community at the Hawaii State Capitol.

The news of the sport’s addition to high school athletics was initially announced in July, with the sport making its debut in spring 2026.

Officials with the Hawaii High School Athletic Association said the tournament will feature both boys’ and girls’ shortboard championships.

The first event will be hosted by the Maui Interscholastic League, which has been a “pioneer in sanctioning interscholastic surfing since 2015 and brings 11 years of experience” to the table.
