HONOLULU (KHON2) — A Kihei man is traveling more than 4,000 miles across the United States to compete in a challenge in North Carolina.
Jeremy “Lako” Miller competed against some of the greatest heavy equipment operators in Caterpillar’s Global Operator Challenge.

The competition was held in a Caterpillar facility in Clayton, North Carolina. Miller works for Goodfellow Brothers on Maui.
“The Global Operator Challenge as a tribute to skilled professionals who build and maintain our nation’s infrastructure,” said Jason Hurdis, global industry solutions manager for Caterpillar. “In an industry that continues to face labor shortages and the challenge of evolving technologies, the Global Operator Challenge highlights the critical role of machine operators and specialized, technical and hands-on skills required for a career in the trades.”
Miller operated four different pieces of Cat equipment in the challenge.
“If you like challenge, it’s very challenging and demanding, talking about efficiency, you know, trying to get things done quickly, and correctly, so if you like challenges, perfect job,” said Miller.
The winners of this regional challenge will move on to the Global Operator Challenge Finals in Las Vegas in March.
