HONOLULU (KHON2) — Honolulu police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in the downtown Honolulu area near Punchbowl and Beretania.
The area fronting Queen’s Medical Center was shut down at approximately 10:34 a.m., according to an HNL Alert, which cited a police investigation.
Police at the scene confirmed a shooting had taken place, and that the man was brought inside the hospital and was pronounced dead.
In a statement, The Queen’s Medical Center said no patients, visitors or staff were harmed and they are “fully cooperating with HPD’s investigation.”
Witnesses told KHON2 they heard several shots being fired and initially assumed it was fireworks.
“I heard several shots, I looked outside the window and saw that people were hiding and covering and I went to our lobby area to see that cops were behind their car doors and had guns drawn out towards someone towards the hospital side,” one witness said. “There was like four or five police officer cars there and everyone was behind their car doors.”
“I saw them put the body on the stretcher and a bunch of medical staff came out,” the witness continued.
HPD Homicide detectives were on scene, with roughly three dozen officers, including members of the police union.
At 12:22 p.m., an HNL Alert was sent out that announced the reopening of one lane of Punchbowl Street between Vineyard Boulevard and Beretania Street.
Officials said there was no threat to the public and the investigation remains ongoing.
There is no further information at this time.
This is the third officer-involved shooting to happen on Oahu in 2025, and the ninth overall statewide.
