HONOLULU (KHON2) — Honolulu police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in the downtown Honolulu area near Punchbowl and Beretania.
HPD said they received a report just after 10:15 a.m. involving a 50-year-old man at The Queen’s Medical Center who was expressing “suicidal thoughts and stated that he had a firearm.”
The area fronting Queen’s was shut down roughly 15 minutes later, when officers arrived at the scene and saw the man standing along the sidewalk of Punchbowl Street.
HPD Interim Chief Rade Vanic said that when officers approached, the man reached into his waistband area, pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the officers.
“The suspect was detained immediately after being subdued and was taken to The Queen’s Medical Center for treatment. The male subsequently succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased,” Interim Chief Vanic said.
He added that the suspect has a total of four criminal convictions, including one felony conviction for assault on a law enforcement officer.
Witnesses told KHON2 they heard several shots being fired and initially assumed it was fireworks.
“I heard several shots, I looked outside the window and saw that people were hiding and covering and I went to our lobby area to see that cops were behind their car doors and had guns drawn out towards someone towards the hospital side,” one witness said. “There was like four or five police officer cars there and everyone was behind their car doors.”
In a statement, The Queen’s Medical Center said no patients, visitors or staff were harmed and they are “fully cooperating with HPD’s investigation.”
Interim Chief Vanic said no officers were injured during the incident and stated that the two officers who discharged their firearms have five years of service with the department.
This is the third officer-involved shooting to happen on Oahu in 2025, and the ninth overall statewide.
