KAILUA, Oahu (KHON2) — A special reunion between mothers and their keiki was made possible ahead of Halloween.
On Saturday, Oct. 11, the Women’s Community Correctional Center hosted a Halloween-themed Kids’ Day for eight mothers, 12 children and 10 caregivers.
In collaboration with Wellspring Covenant Church, mothers spent quality time with their keiki playing volleyball, Halloween-themed games and arts and crafts.

Several inmates who are currently students at the Kapiʻolani Community College Culinary Arts Program served families a Halloween-themed lunch, including chili with frank and rice, mini pizzas and smash teriaki burgers.
“Events like this are successful because of our dedicated staff at WCCC and community partners,” Director Tommy Johnson of the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said. “Kids’ Day helps mothers maintain bonds with their children. It also serves as a reminder on what’s important and what to strive for — reunification with their families when they reenter the community upon their release.”
Families also got to enjoy a wide variety of desserts prepared by the students, including pumpkin muffins, chocolate croissants and more.
Women’s Community Correctional Center Warden Ione “Noni” Guillonta said, “These types of special events are crucial in strengthening bonds between mothers and their children.”
Wellspring Covenant Church sponsored the event with donations from the community. Pastor Cheryl Takabayashi of Wellspring Covenant Church said it’s a blessing to be part of Kids’ Day and see the joy and love between mothers and their children.
