University of Hawai‘i quarterback Micah Alejado, linebacker Jamih Otis and placekicker Kansei Matsuzawa were honored by the Mountain West Conference on Monday following standout performances in the Rainbow Warriors’ 44-26 win over Utah State.
Alejado was named Freshman of the Week, Otis earned Defensive Player of the Week and Matsuzawa received Special Teams Player of the Week honors. It marks Alejado’s third freshman award this season and the fourth of his career. Matsuzawa collected his fourth special teams award, while Otis notched his first defensive honor this year and the second of his career.
Alejado threw for 413 yards on 34-of-54 passing with three touchdowns, marking his second straight 400-yard game. The redshirt freshman now has three 400-yard performances in his first six career starts, becoming the first FBS quarterback to do so since Washington State’s Anthony Gordon in 2019.
Otis was responsible for two takeaways, forcing a fumble and recording his first career interception in the fourth quarter. He also contributed five tackles and a quarterback hurry.
Matsuzawa remained perfect on the season, converting all three field-goal attempts to improve to 19-for-19. Dating back to last year, the junior has made 20 straight field goals, tying the UH school record set by All-American Jason Elam in 1989.
The Rainbow Warriors (5-2, 2-1 Mountain West) travel to Fort Collins on Saturday to face Colorado State (2-4, 1-1).
