Fa-BOO-lous, family-friendly Halloween activities

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Looking to scare up some fa-BOO-lous family-friendly Halloween plans? Don’t fear, there are plenty of options for keiki across Oʻahu this year.

Parties at the Parks

The Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation dares you to check out the variety of free events they will be hosting throughout the month to get into the spirit of Halloween.

  • Trunk or Treat in Hoʻaeʻae Community Park: On Oct. 24, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the parking lot of Hoʻaeʻae Community Park, keiki can go trunk to trunk for treats. The parking lot will be closed as early as 3 p.m. to create a safe space for families to play carnival games and gather goodies. The event is free; it is recommended that you register early on this website.
  • FaBOOlous Frolic at George Fred Wright Wahiawa District Park: On Oct. 24, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., this free event allows keiki to show off their costumes early and trick-or-treat. The event is free for the whole family.
  • Pumpkin Palooza at Koko Head District Park: On Oct. 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., everyone is invited to participate in arts and crafts, fall games, photo booths and a hidden pumpkin hunt. Keiki participants up to 12 years old can grab goodie bags and even win a grand prize. The event is free; it is recommended that you register early on this website. Space is limited.
  • Inaugural Haunted Mansion at McCully District Park: On Oct. 31, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the event will frighten families for the very first time at the haunted house suitable for all ages. Trunk-or-treat, face painting and more will be at this event.

Mall Crawls

These events allow keiki to creep and crawl at all of the islands’ malls. These free events help create a safe, indoor space for families to get into the Halloween spirit and show off to-die-for costumes.

  • Halloween Celebration at Market City Shopping Center on Oct. 18, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Spooktacular Annual Halloween Costume Contest at Kahala Mall on Oct. 24, starts at 4:30 p.m.
  • Mahalo-Ween at FarmLovers Pearlridge Farmers Market on Oct. 25, from 8 a.m. to noon
  • Halloween Spooktacular at Hawaiʻi Kai Towne Center Marina Docks Stage on Oct. 25, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Vamp Up the Fang-Tastic Fun at Mililani Shopping Center on Oct. 25, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Trick-or-treat & Costume Contest at Royal Hawaiian Center on Oct. 26, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Halloween Mall-wide Trick-or-Treating at Kahala Mall on Oct. 31, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Candy Crawl at Pearlridge Center on Oct 30, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m..
  • Trick-or-treating at International Market Place on Oct. 31, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Ala-Ween Spooktacular at Ala Moana Center on Oct. 31, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  •  Pumpkin Pāʻina at SALT at Our Kakaʻako on Oct. 31, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Kaukau & Kars Presents: Trunk or Treat! at Ka Makana Aliʻi on Nov. 1 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Creatures, Cinema and Crops

There are even more scary cute activities for families to enjoy. If you want to stroll through the pumpkin patch or sit back, relax and enjoy some Halloween classics on the big screen… these events are to die for.

  • Honolulu Zoo Society’s HallowZOO Celebration at the Honolulu Zoo: On Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., families can experience the Scare-venger Hunt, Haunted Habitat Treat Trail and educational hands-on activities. The event is free with regular zoo admission.
  • “ParaNorman” in 3D is screening at Consolidated WARD with Titan Luxe from Oct. 25 through Oct. 27, rated PG. Visit the website for showtimes and tickets.
  • “The Nightmare Before Christmas” in 3D is screening at Olino by Consolidated Theatres with Titan Luxe and Consolidated Kapolei on Oct. 22 and Oct. 29, rated PG. Visit the website for showtimes and tickets.
  • The Waimānalo Country Farms Fall Harvest Festival: Happening Sept. 27 through Nov. 9, Monday through Friday, open from 1 pm to 4 pm. Weekend hours are 9 am to 4 pm. Additional details on the website. From pumpkin patches to sunflower fields, this iconic photo spot captures the spirit of fall. The festival is first-come, first-served with no prior reservations needed.
  • The Aloun Farms 23rd Annual Pumpkin Fall Festival: Happening Oct. 18 & 19, Oct. 25 & 26 and Nov. 1 & 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, please visit the website. All are invited to harvest their own corn, string beans and pumpkins. Other activities include a petting zoo, tractor hayrides and more.
