Female, 57, rescued on the Hanakapi‘ai Trail

HĀ‘ENA (KHON2) — On Saturday, Oct. 18, a 57-year-old female was rescued by the Kauaʻi Fire Department on the Hanakapi‘ai Trail in Hā‘ena.

Around 2:25 p.m., the Hanalei Fire Station and Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 were sent to help a distressed hiker on the Hanakapi‘ai Trail, KFD reports said.

KFD reported that crews were able to locate the hiker and assess at the 1.5-mile landing zone. The distressed hiker, a 57-year-old female visitor from Virginia Beach, VA, showed signs of weakness, exhaustion and nausea.

The hiker was transported by Air 1 to the Princeville Airport, where advanced medical treatment was performed by American Medical Response. Around 3:40 p.m., the scene was cleared, officials said.

KFD wants to remind the public to be prepared when it comes to hiking the Hanakapi‘ai and Kalalau trails. Hikers are exposed to challenging elements such as steep terrain, heat and limited access to shade or water.

KFD says that remaining hydrated, knowing your limits and when to turn around can be cautionary steps you can take to avoid accidents or emergencies while hiking.
