Fun event on Oahu has da scoops on science of ice cream

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Leeward Community College’s Wahiawa Value-Added Product Development Center has an exciting ice cream workshop this week. The center’s team helps Hawaii’s value-added food entrepreneurs and farmers turn their ideas into market-ready products – through access to commercial kitchens, product development guidance, and business support services.

“The Inside Scoop: Science of Ice Cream workshop is a family-friendly, hands-on session happening this Friday, October 24, from 5 to 7 PM at the WVAPDC, where participants through the science of frozen desserts like ice cream, sherbet, and shave ice – exploring what makes one variety creamy and another icy,” said Hailey Zhou, the product development manager and resident food scientist at Leeward Community College’s Wahiawā Value-Added Product Development Center. “I’ll also guide tastings of commercial and house-made samples to show how different ingredients and processes shape flavor and texture. The workshop is part of the center’s ongoing educational programming that helps local food.”

“We welcome food professionals, families with kids 10 and over, and anyone who loves ice cream to join us this Friday, October 24, from 5 to 7 PM,” Zhou said. “And if you can’t make the ice cream workshop, we’ve got more exciting sensory programs coming soon, including a free taste testing table at our monthly market day tomorrow, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. A frozen dessert training series called the “Ice Cream University”, designed for local entrepreneurs, where we’ll take a deeper dive into formulation, scale-up production, and regulations around ice cream and frozen desserts. So whether you’re just curious or ready to start your own frozen treat line, there’s something for you.”
