HONOLULU (KHON2) — Honolulu is making its way up the global ranks as one of the safest cities to visit. Ranked fifth on a worldwide survey, the Aloha Spirit has become a main tourist attraction.
The Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection study, published by Travel + Leisure, is an international ranking that evaluates cities based on how safe travelers feel while visiting.
“I have been a frequent traveler to Honolulu over the past several years and no matter where I am, day or night, I have never felt uneasy,” said Penny Fry from Phoenix, AZ, a traveler who has visited Honolulu multiple times a year since 2020. “I always feel welcomed by both the locals and other vacationers. In the busier areas, there is an understated police presence that gives you a feeling of security. It’s the kind of city that embodies the Aloha Spirit.”
Last year, Honolulu ranked 13th on this list. It has jumped to the top due to its elements of livability, unique island geography and overall public safety, which travelers were particularly drawn to.
The survey collects responses from travelers across the globe who have recently visited these destinations and are asked to rate their safety-based experiences.
“This is well-earned recognition for our city and for the people of Honolulu who make our island home safe, welcoming and deeply respectful of others,” said Managing Director of the City and County of Honolulu, Mike Formby.
A variety of factors, such as violent crime, terrorism, public health, transportation safety, safety for women, the LGBTQIA+ community and people of color, determine how safe travelers feel when traveling.
Formby added, “In an era when safety is a top consideration for global travel, our first responders, residents and businesses are proving that we can be both an extraordinary destination and a community built on public safety, community awareness, and, above all else, ‘Aloha’ for others.”
