HONOLULU (KHON2) — The State of Hawaiʻi’s Department of Transportation has announced a new initiative to further mālama Maui.
Modular homes will soon be making their way to Lāhainā to help house teachers displaced by the 2023 wildfire.
HDOT announced that the deliveries are planned to begin Monday, Nov. 3, and will continue through Jan. 19, 2026.
Trucks will haul the modular homes from Kahului Harbor between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. every Monday through January.
The route begins on Hobron Avenue, turns east on Hāna Highway, and then continues along Elmer F. Cravalho Way to Kūihelani Highway. The homes will be staged at a site off Waikō Road in Waikapū before being transported to Lāhainā later that night.
Nighttime hauling will take place from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Mondays. During those hours, trucks will move the homes west along Kūihelani Highway to Honoapiʻilani Highway, then travel the Lāhainā Bypass before turning onto Lahainaluna Road.
The homes will be delivered to a site below Lahainaluna High School.
Motorists are being told to expect slowdowns or temporary stops along the route because of the size of the units.
Traffic escorts will accompany the convoys, and drivers are advised to follow all posted signs and traffic controller directions.
HDOT is encouraging drivers to plan ahead and check its social media pages on Facebook and Twitter/X @DOTHawaii for updates or changes to the schedule.
The department said it appreciates the community’s patience as it works to support housing for Maui teachers returning to Lāhainā.
