1 dead, 1 sick from listeria infection in Hawaii

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hawaii health officials say one person has died and another got sick after being infected with listeria.

The Hawaii State Department of Health confirmed the infection and that both individuals were infected with the same outbreak strain.

The DOH said that the strain has been linked to prepared pasta meals that have since been recalled due to a potential listeria contamination.

Recalled products include Sprouts Farmers Market smoked mozzarella pasta salad, which was not distributed in Hawaii, and Scott & Jon’s shrimp scampi with linguini bowls.

Investigators found that the two infected individuals had eaten and purchased the foods in the month before they got sick, but both cases showed no link to the recalled products.

A total of 27 individuals have been infected with the disease nationwide, said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC recommends that you do not eat the recalled foods and to either return them or throw them out.
