HONOLULU (KHON2) — Episode 36 of the ongoing eruption at Kilauea is getting close, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
Both vents continue to have minor splattering at Halemaumau Crater and one of the vents is showcasing frequent lava overflows.
The USGS believes episode 36 is likely to start in the next 24 to 48 hours.
Previously, episode 35’s lava fountains began around 8:05 p.m. on Oct. 17, ending at 3:32 a.m. the next day.
A record was set for the highest single fountain and pair of fountains seen, which reached almost 1,500 feet at the south vent and 1,100 feet at the north vent, during that eruption, USGS said.
