HANALEI BAY, Hawaii (KHON2) — Kauai’s Hanalei Bay is closed until further notice after a surfer was bitten by a shark — leaving him with multiple leg injuries.
According to Kauai County officials, the incident happened around 3:10 p.m. while he was surfing near Pine Trees surf break.
First responders treated the male resident for his injuries before bringing him to Wilcox Medical Center.
Initially, Kauai County reported that the man was in critical condition. In a 4:35 p.m. update, officials issued a correction saying he is not. At this time, the surfer’s condition is unclear.
At this time, officials said there is no information on the type or size of the shark involved in this incident.
In the meantime, lifeguards have posted ‘shark sighted’ and ‘no swimming’ signs in the area along the beach.
Hanalei Bay will reassess the water on Thursday, Nov. 6 to determine if it is safe for swimming.
KHON2 has reached out to Kauai County and the Department of Land and Natural Resources for further comment.
