Police investigating pedestrian fatality in Volcano

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Thursday afternoon, on Highway 11 at the Alii Koa Street intersection in Volcano, Hawaii Island officers responded to a motor vehicle/pedestrian collision.

The pedestrian was a was a 44-year-old male from Volcano and was found unresponsive when police arrived.

Multiple witnesses reported the pedestrian was standing by a stop sign prior to running into the road in front of a pickup truck operated by a 52-year-old male when he was struck.

He was transported to Hilo Medical Center and pronounced dead at 4:17 p.m.

The operator of the 2012 Chevy pickup truck was not injured as a result of the collision.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

At this time, police believe that speed and inattention are not factors in this collision.
