HAWAII KAI, Hawaii (KHON2) — Essential rehabilitation work for three bridges in Hawaii Kai has begun. Wake Up 2Day’s Chris Latronic went live in Hawaii kai to check out the needed work by the City and County of Honolulu Department of Design and Construction along with the details of possible road closures and parking restrictions involved.
The three bridges undergoing rehabilitation include Hawaii Kai Drive Bridge, Keahole Street Bridge over Kuapa Pond crossing the Hawaii Kai Marina and Waialua Street Bridge, also over Kuapa Pond.
Construction will last approximately six months, barring unforeseen conditions and weather events. Work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., excluding holidays.
The rehab work involved demolishing and restoring spalled concrete in the substructure to extend the bridges’ lifespan, address potential hazards and ensure the bridges remain safe for the public.
Work will be done in phases to minimize inconvenience to the public. The bridges will remain open to vehicular and pedestrian traffic during this period.
Temporary lane closures may be implemented if necessary. Access through the marina waterway will be affected by construction equipment, but all bridge locations will remain navigable.
Motorists, vessel operators and pedestrians should allow extra time while traveling through the area and observe all posted signs, traffic controls and special duty officers.
Worl officials will also place “No Parking” signs along impacted areas near each bridge site one week in advance. Drivers are asked to observe the dates and times of these notices. Otherwise, vehicles parked on posted streets will be towed at the owner’s expense.
