Kona collision claims life, charges filed

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A Kailua-Kona man has been charged with negligent homicide after allegedly operating a vehicle under the influence, killing a man in Kona Monday, July 22.

Hawaii Island police have 34-year-old Garrett Aadom Duran in custody at the Kealakehe Police Station for their belief of his involvement in a single-vehicle collision.

Police said they responded to a call at 3:45 a.m. where it was determined a green 2015 Subaru Forester driven by Duran crossed over the white fog line and struck a 38-year-old male.

Duran abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene.

He was later located a block away and arrested.

The pedestrian was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:59 a.m.

Duran has been charged with:

First-degree negligent homicide

Accident involving injury or death

Operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant

Operating a vehicle without insurance

He remains in custody on a $106,000 bail.
