Hawaiʻi’s hometown heroes at the Paris Olympics

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Exciting news from the 2024 Paris Olympics! A recent study by LiveSportsOnTV.com has revealed that Hawaiʻi boasts the second highest proportion of Olympians in the United States when considering the number of athletes relative to the population size.

Hawaiʻi, known for its breathtaking beaches and watersports, has produced five exceptional athletes competing in the Paris Games.

The Paris 2024 Olympics will host around 10,500 athletes from 206 different National Olympic Committees. Despite the vast number of competitors, Hawaiʻi stands out with its significant contribution to Team USA.

Rob Demello, sports director at KHON2 Sports, shared his insights, “Hawaiʻi has some of the biggest names in the game right now in the sport of surfing. We have Carissa Moore, the defending gold medalist, and John John Florence, ranked number one in the world. It’s amazing to see them represent us on such a grand stage.”

In comparison, Washington, D.C., ranks first with the highest number of athletes per capita. Hawaiʻi follows closely in second place, showcasing its strong athletic presence.

Colorado, with its focus on winter sports, comes in third with 19 athletes. California, home to the highest number of Olympians overall, ranks fourth when adjusted for population size. Vermont, known for its scenic landscapes and outdoor culture, is fifth with two athletes.
