The first printout showed Iwamoto edging incumbent Scott Saiki with 52% of the votes to Saikiʻs 47%.

“Well, I am still anxious,” Iwamoto told KHON2, “Iʻve never been ahead on a print out so thatʻs whatʻs different. It feels great.”

Iwamoto is optimistic after running against Saiki two previous times.

“Iʻm just excited with the possibilities.”

Meanwhile, Saikiʻs campaign issued the following statement:

“This is still a close primary and we’re waiting on the second printout. We believe that there are still votes out there. In the meantime, we just want to thank all of our supporters and our friends and all the voters of district 25 that have voted that have taken the time to vote this primary.”
