HONOLULU (KHON2) — The windward areas of the Hawaiian islands can expect showers over the next couple days as a storm system works its way west, bringing with it the possibility of a tropical cyclone.
Currently, the system is moving westward toward Hawaii at 10 to 15 miles per hour and is expected to strengthen as it moves into the central Pacific basin.
The showers and thunderstorms are unorganized currently but the National Weather Service said a tropical depression or storm could develop with just a little improvement in organization.
The system is expected to develop into a depression far east-southeast of the islands later Wednesday or into Thursday.
The NWS said there is a 90% chance of cyclone formation in the next 48 hours.
It is too early to determine the magnitude or exact location, according to the NWS.
