Ceremonies mark 9/11 anniversary

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – A day after the debate, the presidential campaign paused Wednesday while the candidates took time to pay their respects for the lives lost on September 11th.

Nearly 3,000 people died at the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump shook hands and stood just feet apart.

Relatives read names of the people who died when hijackers crashed two airplanes into the World Trade Center 23 years ago.

“It is such an amazing thing to see both the tragedy of 9/11 but the incredible lives people have built out of that tragedy,” said Sen. JD. Vance (R-Ohio.) and Republican vice-presidential candidate

Terrorists also hijacked flight 93 on 9/11, they were likely headed for the U.S. Capitol.

Passengers and crew fought back, and eventually, the plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Harris laid a wreath at the memorial followed by former president Trump.

At the Pentagon, a flag marked the spot where terrorists crashed American Airlines flight 77.

“We remember. The men and women at the Department of Defense remember,” said Secretary Lloyd Austin.

The candidates will be back on the campaign trail Thursday, Harris and Gov. Tim Walz will start a four-day tour of key swing states.  Trump is headed to Arizona and California.
