2 dead, 1 in critical condition following multiple crashes on Oahu

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A series of motor vehicle collisions on Oahu gave the island its 16th and 17th traffic fatalities of 2024 and left one in critical condition.

On Tuesday, Oahu witnessed its 16th traffic fatality in the area of Kapolei Parkway and Kunehi Street just before 9 p.m. when it was reported that a 53-year-old male driver struck a 66-year-old male pedestrian.


DOH: Hawaii sees more than 1k increase in COVID cases

The incident caused the complete road closure of Kapolei Parkway West between Kunehi Street and Fort Barrette Road around 9:20 p.m. while officials investigated.

Honolulu police said the male pedestrian was walking outside of a marked crosswalk on Kapolei Parkway where he was struck by the 53-year-old motorist.

EMS officials transported the pedestrian to an area hospital “where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.”

Oahu’s 17th traffic fatality occurred in the Manoa area on Wednesday around 10 a.m. at the intersection of East Manoa Road and Oahu Avenue.

HPD reported that a 74-year-old male driver lost control of his vehicle as he was traveling northbound on Oahu Avenue and collided with a 71-year-old female driver at the intersection of East Manoa Road.

The male driver was found unresponsive at the scene and was transported to an area hospital in critical condition by Honolulu EMS where he was later pronounced dead.

Though it is unknown how and why the male driver lost control, officials believe he may have been suffering a medical condition. The 71-year-old female remained uninjured.

In the Ala Moana area, a 78-year-old male moped rider is in critical condition after he collided with a 47-year-old male driver on King Street just before 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

Officials said the moped rider was attempting to change lanes when he collided with the male motorist and was thrown onto the road.

First responders transported the moped rider to an area hospital in critical condition where he is being treated for head injuries. The male driver was uninjured.
