2 Maui teens arrested on suspicion of night hunting within Oprah’s ranch

WAILUKU, Hawaii (KHON2) — Officers from the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement arrested Luke Allen and Ty Munoz, both 19, after observing them allegedly using a spotlight for hunting purposes just before midnight on Friday, June 21 in the Kula area of Maui.

The incident happened near the intersection of Thompson Road and Kamaʻole Road. According to the DLNR, Thompson Road, where the men were seen, runs through private property owned by the Oprah Winfrey Ranch.

DOCARE officers discovered a loaded shotgun and a loaded rifle in Allen and Munoz’s truck. They were also hunting without valid licenses and were allegedly night hunting on private property without permission. It was later revealed that Allen’s rifle was unregistered.

Allen was arrested and booked for the following alleged violations of Hawai‘i Revised Statutes (HRS) and Hawai‘i Administrative Rules (HAR):

HRS 183D-21 Hunting License Required
HRS 183D-27 Hunting on private lands at night without permission
HRS 134-27(A) Place to Keep Ammunition
HAR 13-123-7 Artificial Light Prohibited (for hunting with the use of artificial light)
HRS 134-3 Registration Mandatory (for unregistered .22cal semi-automatic rifle)

Munoz was also arrested and booked for the following alleged violations:
