HONOLULU (KHON2) — Over the weekend, multiple west-side moped riders were involved in critical motor vehicle collisions in the Ewa Beach and Waianae areas.
The first incident happened on Friday around 6:47 p.m. on Farrington Highway when a 17-year-old female moped rider collided with a metal guardrail.
HPD’s Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section said the female attempted to turn left on Leihoku Street before the collision and was ejected onto the grassy shoulder area.
Honolulu EMS transported her to an area hospital in serious condition, where her condition later worsened to critical condition.
On Sunday, a 77-year-old male moped rider was found in serious condition following a crash in the Ewa Beach area.
The incident happened around 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of Ft. Weaver Road and Renton Road.
HPD reported that the moped rider was “heading northbound on the shoulder of Ft. Weaver Road” and was hit by a pickup truck as he was crossing Renton Road.
Reports said the 29-year-old male pick-up driver was given the green light while traveling eastbound on Renton Road.
The two motorists collided and the moped rider was ejected onto the roadway.
EMS responded to the incident and transported the moped rider to an area hospital in critical condition. The 29-year-old male pickup driver and the 23-year-old male passenger were uninjured and remained on scene.
Both moped riders were reportedly not wearing helmets during the time of the collisions.
