The transmission main break happened on Mekia Street near Shima’s Supermarket. Waimanalo community members between Mekia Street and Sea Life Park, including Waimanalo Elementary and Intermediate School, are the most affected.

Department of Education officials contacted parents and staff that the school is expected to be without water until repairs are made.

Additionally, the main break has caused a full closure of Mekia Street between Kalanianaole Highway and Lukanela Street.

Reports said traffic heading into Hawaii-Kai was also heavily impacted. Officials modified traffic to allow one lane in each direction.

Drivers are advised to use Poalima Street during the full road closure and to drive with caution when moving through the work area.

Waimanalo customers are urged to minimize water use to essential needs only, such as cooking, cleaning and sanitary needs.
