KAHULUI, Hawaii (KHON2) — Hawaiian Electric crews are responding to multiple power outages on Maui due to severe thunderstorms passing through the island.
The outages impact roughly 21,000 customers in South Maui and parts of Central Maui, Upcountry and West Maui.
HECO emphasized that the outages are storm-related and are not part of the Public Safety Power Shutoff program.
Crews are working to conduct damage assessments in safe areas to do so but customers should plan for potential extended outages.
All power lines must be inspected for damaged equipment before power can be safely restored.
“Hawaiian Electric understands that people need to know when their power will be restored, and we will keep the public updated on the progress of our restoration efforts,” HECO said in a news release.
If there are any downed power lines in your area, report them by calling (808) 871-7777. Dangerous situations such as sparking electrical equipment should be reported to 911.

Customers should also stay at least 30 feet away from the lines as they can be energized and dangerous.
