“For more than three decades, Dr. Stephen Leatherman, a.k.a. “Dr. Beach”, has reviewed, evaluated and rated beaches and coastal areas throughout the world,” explained a spokesperson for Dr. Beach. “In addition to his annual ranking of America’s Best Beaches, he works tirelessly to increase awareness about the dangers of rip currents and to promote no smoking at beaches.”

Coming in at #1 Duke Kahanamoku Beach on Oʻahu

Kahanamoku Beach is located on the west end of Waikīkī Beach. According to Dr. Beach, it is typically less crowded and the widest beach in the area. Protected by an offshore coral reef, it’s ideal for families with children. Nearby Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon is a popular swimming spot; and this picturesque beach offers stunning views which include the iconic Diamondhead (Lēʻahi) volcano in the distance.

Coming in at #3 Wailea Beach on Maui

Wailea Beach consists of five small beaches within the Wailea resort complex, which must provide public access. The white coral sand slopes gently into the ocean, making it great for calm-day snorkeling. The upscale hotels are set back from the beach, creating a beautifully landscaped park adorned with tropical vegetation and flowering bushes and trees, offering a picturesque and serene environment for visitors.

Coming in at #7 Poipu Beach on Kauaʻi

Poipu Beach, located on the sunny, dry side of the island, features two beaches separated by a tombolo which is a narrow sand spit leading to an offshore island. This island reduces wave size, to create gentle, shallow waves that are perfect for keiki. The crescent-shaped beach offers varying wave sizes depending on exposure to the Pacific Ocean, making it a diverse and fun area for beachgoers.
